Is perfectionism stopping you from marketing your business?

Hands up - who is a perfectionist?

I am!

Most definitely and it is something I am slowly but surely working on - although it hasn't been easy. So I can understand when people come to me and say that they have put off marketing their business because they want it to be perfect.

Not too sure if this is you? Do you...

- constantly want to change your branding in order to 'make it better'

- spend hours on end creating not a great deal of content

- feel nervous or uneasy when promoting your business

- always see the small 'flaws' in your post that no one else seems to notice

- avoid marketing your business

- agonise over the smallest of details (like an emoji)

There are many reasons why people struggle with perfectionism, and I am not qualified to get into that, but I do see that directly impacting their business.

So what can we do to try and combat that?

  1. Start small

It can be overwhelming to try and go from this avoidance of posting to try and think about 5x posts a week or posting on multiple platforms, so start small. Set yourself the goal to post on one platform 3x a week. This is going to be easier to deal with, than trying to think about 5x posts a week or how to optimise your posts for different platforms. Consistency is key on social media - so which your focus on to being consistent.

2. Accountability

Use an accountability partner to help with whatever part of perfectionism that is stopping you. So scared of writing the content you don't start? Find someone who can hold you accountable to writing 3x posts a week - batching content may be a good idea.

Scared of recording reels? Find someone who you are comfortable with who can record them with you or help you to research into suitable ideas.

Constantly need reassurance or like to have a sounding board? Find someone who is happy to listen to your concerns and allow you to get them off your chest and then gives you the confidence to post.

3. Push yourself

I dare you to push yourself - go on! Publish something you think is only 80% done and see what happens. I bet no one else will notice. The more practice you get at doing this, the easier it will become. You are not lowering your standards, you are allowing yourself to live beyond the rules you have set for yourself.

Maybe you can implement these ideas as a goal for the next three months and see where you will be in 90 days! Your feed could be consistently gaining engagement, your live videos gaining reach, your sales going up and your revenue too.

What have you got to lose?
